QMUL Runner Up for Sunday Times University of the Year

Title comes after season of success in university league tables

Queen Mary University of London has been named runner-up in the prestigious Sunday Times ‘University of the Year’ contest, behind the University of Oxford.

Explaining the choice, the Sunday Times wrote ‘Queen Mary continues to prove that social inclusion and academic success are not mutually exclusive’, detailing how ‘48% of UK students are the first in their family to attend university; seven out of 10 are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds and three in 10 are from households with an income below £35,000’.

The announcement was celebrated by the university administration, with Principal Colin Bailey commenting ‘It is wonderful to see the ongoing hard work of all our staff and students rewarded in this way’ in an email to all students.

The University of Oxford won the award for the second time, credited with ‘academic leadership’, vital work on a Covid-19 vaccine, and the decision to accept all offer holders following the algorithm crisis – a move that facilitated its largest intake of state school pupils yet.

The result was published alongside The Sunday Times’ Good University Guide in September, which ranks every university in the UK. Queen Mary rose 8 places from last year’s result to 41st.

Other London institutions had mixed fortunes, with LSE rising to take 4th, Imperial 5th, and UCL 8th; while King’s College remained 30th, SOAS dropped to 50th, and Goldsmiths College fell 29 places to take 97th.

QMUL also excelled in a number of individual subjects, achieving 5th place for Dentistry, 5th for Drama, Dance and Cinematic Studies, and an impressive 11th for Medicine.

The University of Cambridge topped the annual list for the second year in a row, placing first in 32 subjects.
