Kim Jones has managed to create a fresh, young, vibe with his recent collections at Dior.
His 2019 show in Paris showed this fresh energy through his pops of colour which was mirrored in the Dior x Kaws neon pink rag doll centerepiece of the catwalk:
Alongside Virgil Abloh, the collection exuded a playful, ‘streetwear’ side with sneakers styled with straight legged trousers or a colourful tailored suit.
Jones’ incorporation of the modern logo print into the Galliano prototype saddlebag or leather boots also shows this playful side which speaks to the millennial generation. In addition to the ‘logomania’ prints, the accessory pieces in collaboration with Kaws reflects a unique way of how modern art is starting to be infused into garments. Jones cites artist Hajime Sorayama for inspiration and visited the artists exhibition prior to the collection.
This futuristic expression is then developed in his recent 2020 collection. The shapes remain straight and have a kind of equestrian or military feel, yet the colours are loud and speak out against the lines:
Having consulted for Kanye Wests’ Yeezy brand it’s clear that Jones is comfortable playing with the idea of street fashion and he uses this to his advantage. Jones’ experience with collaborations while working at Louis Vuitton also shows through in his collections with the Kaws incorporated prints for example and it will be exciting to see if there are any future collaborations to come!
