Welcome to QM Bhangra Society

What is Bhangra?

‘Bhangra’ is a genre of music and folk dance that originated in Punjab, India. Traditionally, bhangra was associated with celebrating the harvest season. As Punjab is a particularly agricultural region within India, the style of dance was inspired by farmers’ daily routines, including moves that portray the cutting of wheat, and sowing of seeds.

While practised in India, bhangra has spread throughout the globe over the past 100 years, and is especially popular within South Asian communities in the UK, USA and Canada. As a result, bhangra music is often fused with popular Western music and digital sampling.

What we do

The QM Bhangra society predominately centres around dance, holding regular classes to teach people of all abilities basic choreography and routines. Previously, we have collaborated with other universities to hold classes, and taken part in national Bhangra competitions such as ‘Capital Bhangra’.

This year, our newly formed committee are dedicated to providing quality classes featuring a range of dynamic mixes. As well as classes, we also hold social events, so everyone in the society can get to know each other better. We are pleased to say that our meet and greet this year had an amazing turnout, and once again, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us this year!

How you can get involved?

We are always welcoming new members, and stress that people of all abilities are welcome! Most people within our society actually joined as beginners, so there is no need to feel you must have experience. Classes are normally held once a week and are between 1-2 hours at QMotion. Classes cost £1 for members and £2 for non-members, which are paid at the door. You can become a member online by going to
