After demolishing rivals Scotland 6-0, out-smarting Spain to win 2-0 and grinding a 2-1 win against Portugal, the England women’s national team have started their Euro 2017 campaign strongly and are the most talked about team so far in the tournament. With deadly rivals France awaiting in the Quarter Finals, a country we have failed to beat since 1974, I’ll be going through why you should be watching the Lionesses and cheering the team on against the French on Sunday night.
Firstly, England, ranked fifth in the world, are one of the best teams in the female game right now and finished the last world cup in third place back in 2015. Mark Sampson’s team have sparked into life under the Welshman in recent years and the team have become loved by all. Without the mega wages seen in the men’s game, the females are down to earth and this is shown within their play; they play with a sense of pride which I haven’t seen in the male national team since 1990, and this makes our females a delight to watch.
The passion is evident every match they play; the tenacity is there for the whole 90 minutes which makes encounters in the final stages of tournaments intriguing viewing. Playing against deadly rivals France will set the pulses racing within the English players, having lost to the French in the past three major tournaments. Sunday night will be explosive and our recent rivalry will mean tackles and cards are set to feature, with emotions running high!
Second is the ability within this England team. As mentioned, the women are ranked fifth in the world and are a team to be reckoned with. The England team boast a fine selection of players, including Women Super League winners and even a Barcelona player. Scouser Toni Duggan has recently joined Spanish giants Barcelona from Manchester City W.F.C, and has 15 goals in 47 caps for England.
Along with that, 7 players from Manchester city feature in the 23 player squad, with the Manchester club the current title winners of the Womens Super League. There are also four players from Chelsea ladies FC, who won the league back in 2015 also feature in the squad, including Fran Kirby who is rumoured to have been the subject of a record transfer when she moved from Reading to Chelsea in 2015.
The current crop of players have enabled a strong start to the competition, winning all three games in the group for the first time since 1982. This is the greatest period in the female national team so everyone should get on board and support our Lionesses. I’ve watched football for over a decade now, but only got into women’s football back in 2013 at the European Champions and I’ve been hooked since.
When we lost to Japan 1-0 in the World Cup semi final in 2015, it was the first time I’ve ever been proud of England at a major tournament. Staying up until the early hours of the morning to watch us vs the Japanese, I was engulfed in our campaign to become world champions and was gutted when we lost.
Competition time has come round again and the buzz has returned in it’s magnitude. England play some great stuff, defending valiantly against the Spanish and blitzing the Scottish. This team is one to behold right now and a pleasure to watch, unlike its male counterpart.
Don’t miss out on an incredible period in women’s football and get behind our national team. This is a must see game against the French and if we do manage to pull off a win, I dare say we’ll win the Euros! Get behind our women and support them this Sunday night at 7.45pm on Channel 4 in what will be a great game of football.
COME ON ENGLAND!!!
