QMUListicles: Top 10 Things to do in Freshers Week at Queen Mary

With Freshers’ Week fast approaching, Becky Crawford lists her top things to do as a new student at Queen Mary.

    1. Make friends

Perhaps the most nerve-racking part of freshers is making friends. It can be pretty daunting being faced with so many new people but everyone is in the same boat and in need of some buddies. Chat to your flatmates, your coursemates or just people you bump into on campus.

    2. Go wild at Freshers’ Fair

All the societies you can imagine will be heckling you to become a member, so make the most of it! Gather as many free sweets, pens and key rings as you can, and sign up for loads of societies even if you’ve never done it before!

     3. Check out the food on campus

Even if it’s only to satisfy your parents worry that you’re actually eating real food, check out the variety of restaurants and cafes at QM before you resort to the pasta and tomato ketchup staple.

     4. Be a shameless tourist

You’re in London baby! Time to whack out your selfie stick and visit all the sights, museums and markets you can manage.

     5. Get yourself a QM hoodie

Show the world you’re officially a student at Queen Mary with some heavily branded clothing. They will also come in very handy should the heating in halls ever pack in.

     6. Experience Drapers

Whether it’s a civilized pizza for lunch, or a less than civilized encounter with Hail Mary, Drapers is in some ways the heart of QM. Learn its location well enough so that you can lead your stumbling friends home at 2.30am, taking a detour via Dixie’s of course.

     7. Picnic in the park

Mile End Park and Victoria Park are just around the corner. Make a trip to Sainsbury’s, gather some hungry students and spend an afternoon lounging in the park.

     8. Visit an independent coffee shop

Combine getting to know people better and fuelling your days with a great cup of coffee. With Roman Road just round the corner, here’s your chance to get a head start on discovering the place with the best coffee, comfy chairs and free Wi-Fi ratio.

     9. Think locally

Brick Lane, Shoreditch, Stratford, Canary Wharf and many other Instagram worthy locations are either within walking distance or just a short bus journey away. Show your followers how much fun you’re having at uni by discovering the best of East London.

    10. Relax

Freshers’ Week can be a lot of fun but it can also be exhausting and quite stressful. Remember to take care of your physical and mental health so you can enjoy all that is on offer.
