QM Sport: Play where the champions play

“What makes QM different from other universities are the facilities that we have on offer to the students and staff partaking in sport.”

Being part of sport at Queen Mary, like any other university, is obviously extremely beneficial in terms of meeting new people, having some fun and, of course, extending the old CV. What makes QM different from other universities are the facilities that we have on offer to the students and staff partaking in sport. Many of you will know how close we are to the Olympic park, but perhaps not as many of you will know that we have use of many of the facilities within the park. Yes, we’re talking about the same venues where Tom Daley dived, where Chris Hoy cycled and where Michael Phelps wiped the floor with everyone else.

QM Sports clubs including Swimming, Handball, Netball and Fencing all utilize these facilities and are proud to host home matches and competitions there. Just think how intimidating it is to hear that you’re playing an away game against QM… and their home ground is the Olympic park. There is also plenty of room available for spectators at these venues, to provide equally intimidating home support.

Don’t think that you’re missing out if Sports Club life is not for you. Don’t feel confident enough to race laps in a monstrously sized pool? Not prepared to battle to the whistle in the Copperbox with 7,000 seats filled with your biggest fans? (Disclaimer: we cannot guarantee sell out capacities but we’re definitely hoping for an increase this year). Don’t fret because there is still plenty of opportunity for you to check out the facilities, including the velodrome! If you’d rather turn up and play with some mates, without the pressure of competitive sport, then QM has another scheme, Get Active, which is perfect for just that. The scheme is in its fourth year, but this year improvements have been made. Damian Lyons, QM’s convener of Get Active says “we are extremely excited to bring back a bigger, better programme of Get Active for 2014/15. Due to generous funding from Sport England, we are able to expand the programme into the Olympic park and offer nine new sports to the students.” These sports will include a 10 week diving course in the competition pool, so book your place now!

At QM we are extremely fortunate to have these opportunities to play sport in the same arenas and stadiums as elite athletes before us. Go for it. It’s yours to take!
