QMUL Somali Society: UCAS Day

QMUL Somali Society: UCAS Day

If you think that societies are only active during term time, well then you’re wrong! Over the summer, QMUL’s Somali Society collaborated with a group of Somali societies from other London universities to host a UCAS Day. The event was the first of its kind and offered priceless opportunities for those who attended. It aimed to create an outreach programme to help and inspire younger generations of students from minority backgrounds.

Speaking about the event, President of the Somalian Society, Adnan Hassan, says: “We believe that all students deserve the right to an education regardless of race. The Somali diaspora are at a huge disadvantage to other communities around them in terms of guidance, opportunity and honest support”.

Around 400 prospective university students attended, many of whom were of Somali heritage. They were given the chance to interact with current Russell Group university students to ask questions about choosing the right course and learn about university life. Attendees were offered on-the-spot personal statement advice, as well as the chance to hear first-hand what over 30 courses are like from over 40 volunteer course reps. Many of the courses included were aimed at UKCAT and Oxbridge candidates.

The event also hosted guest speakers, including Channel 4 reporter, Jamal Osman, Deloitte consultant, Awale Olad and inspirational figure, Dr. Mahamed Hashi. Together, they did an amazing job at inspiring the students who attended to pursue their dream jobs.

Following great feedback from all who attended and took part in the event, QMUL’s Somali Society hope to develop their QMUL Somali Society for helping organise such a successful event. We will be on the lookout this time next year for news of even more success.

Following great feedback from all who attended and took part in the event, QMUL’s Somali Society hope to develop their UCAS Day as an annual event. A huge congratulations to the QMUL Somali Society for helping organise such a successful event. We will be on the lookout this time next year for news of even more success.
