The biggest sporting event on campus is coming up fast. Here’s all you need to know about the Merger Cup.
On Saturday 25th March, the sports teams of Barts and Queen Mary will go head to head in the most highly anticipated sport event at the university. The Merger Cup annually celebrates sport at Queen Mary. But it’s also a competition for one of the most valuable prizes that both Barts and QM students want: bragging rights.
This is a competition not to be underestimated. It’s a long day of sport and excitement. The set-up is as follows: Each sporting team competes throughout the day, and the scores are added up to decide the winner. As all Queen Mary and Barts students know, there is rivalry on a normal day. Mix that with sporting instinct and competitiveness… you can see why it’s such a treasured tournament.
The Merger Cup began in 1995 and Queen Mary have been the victors the most since 2005. However, last year Barts won, with a score of 67-37. QM students will be out for revenge, and Barts will be looking to defend their victory. It’s set to be one for the history books.
The teams have already started preparation for the big day. As Deanna Cook, QM Netball’s vice-president told The Print: “We are very excited for Merger. We’ve all been training hard in preparation and hope it comes through on the day”. Alice Zou, from QM Badminton, told us: “Our players have been training really hard and we have a really strong men’s and mixed team. So we’re really looking forward to winning”. There’s some great confidence and spirit already showing.
The day is made fun for spectators, too. Make sure to go along and cheer on your friends (and your campus). There is music, food and drink to keep you going and create a great atmosphere. The Merger Cup starts at 9am and is being held at Chislehurst Sports Club. Be sure to check out the Facebook page dedicated to the event by searching “Merger Cup 2017”.
